Hey there it’s Krystal Everdeen and I normally make crochet top tutorials on my YouTube channel, but I know that some people find it easier to follow a tutorial in blog-form (aka with pictures and text). Therefore, I have created this beginner-friendly guide on How to Crochet a Halter Top. Enjoy!
Materials: Size 4 Yarn from Loops & Threads, Size 5mm Hook, Scissors
The type of yarn and hook size completely depend on you, these are just the materials I used for this tutorial. Also, if you are completely new to crochet, please visit my Crocheting For Beginners guide to learn everything you need to learn about the basics of crocheting.
Then chain a chain long enough to cover from one side of your ribcage to the other. This is going to serve as the base of your top, so make sure that it covers you well, but does not wrap all around you because you want to leave space in the back to make the crisscrossed straps.
Once you have created your chain, you are going to go back on it with single crochet.
Single crochet is putting your hook through the stitch, wrapping your yarn around the hook, bringing it back through the stitch, then wrapping yarn around the hook again, and pulling it through the last two hooks that are sitting on your hook.
You are going to single crochet throughout the entire row.
Once you reach the end of the row, you are going to chain one, then flip the project over.
Then, you are going to continue down that row with single crochet as well.
By chaining one at the end of the row, you are maintaining the ends so that they are straight and even. However, we are going to change that soon.
Second row of single crochet.
Chain one at the end before flipping it over
Make another row of single crochet. *After my third row of single crochet and chaining one at the end of the row, I continued to the next step- however, my top is a very short crop top/ bikini top; if you want the halter top to cover more of your torso, create more rows of single crochet with a chain one at the end of the row until you put it against your body and you’re happy with the coverage. Once you are going to start working on the part of the halter top that is going to cover your breasts, move on the next step.*
At this point, I completed my second row of single crochet, chained one, flipped the project over, crocheted a third row of single crochet, and now I am at the end of the row.
Now, I am going to start working on making the actual halter shape. To do this, all you need to change is what you do at the end of each row. From now on, every time you reach the end of the row, you are not going to chain one. You are simply going to flip the project over.
You then go into the first stitch with single crochet as you normally would,
but you are going to skip over this second stitch (the one that my hook is pointing to in the picture below)
And go right into the third stitch.
That’s it! And then you are going to continue on throughout the row with single crochet as you normally would. This is going to start making the ends of the project go at an angle (shown in the picture below)
Nothing else about the project changes, you are still going to make a complete row of single crochet.
Again, once you reach the end of the row, you are not going to chain one.
You are simply going to flip it over.
Then go into the first stitch as you normally would.
Skip the second stitch. (the one my left finger is pointing to in the photo above)
Go into the third stitch, and continue throughout the rest of the row with single crochet until you reach the end of the row and repeat the same steps over and over.
What not chaining one at the end and skipping that second stitch does is essentially pull your project inward, creating an angled edge- which is exactly what you want when crocheting a halter.
Each row is decreasing little by little, so continue with this pattern until you are satisfied with the size of neckline. What I do is constantly place the project against myself as if I were going to wear it, and when I am happy with the size and fit, that is when I know I am done.
After you have completed crocheting the top, all you need to do is create the straps. To create the straps, simply start from one end of the neckline portion of the top and chain a very long chain. I normally chain at least 150 chains when I am making straps like these because they are going to serve as both the neck and back straps- so they need to be really long!
After you create your first chain, go back on it with a slip stitch, single crochet along the neckline to the other end and crochet your second strap the same way.
After you have made your straps, grab one of them, bring it over to the opposite side and attach it to the bottom of the halter top. Do the same with the opposite strap to create the crisscrossed design.
Once you have completed that, you are done!
Now it is time to style and rock it!
I hope you found this guide helpful and if you did, I would really appreciate if you shared it- either with friends in person, or via Pinterest, Facebook, etc(: I have also created my very first diagram pattern for this crochet halter top! (see below) Furthermore, if you would like to take a look at my video tutorial on how to crochet a simple halter top, please feel free! Thanks for your support, have fun crocheting!
